Reader question: Appleton has 17 vape shops and counting. Why are there so many, when this is so unhealthy? Plus, it looks kind of tacky.
Answer: According to records kept by the City Clerk’s Office, Appleton has 43 businesses that are licensed to sell electronic vaping devices and related products. Many of them are convenience stores.
There is no limit on the number of vape licenses Appleton can issue, as there is with the number of “Class B” intoxicating liquor licenses that the city can issue under state law.
“We are seeing more of these vapor products establishments and related licenses,” City Clerk Kami Lynch said.
Businesses that want to sell electronic vaping devices in Appleton must fill out an application form and pay a $100 annual license fee and a $7 annual background check fee.
Upon completion of the background check, the application proceeds to the Safety and Licensing Committee for a recommendation to the Common Council.
“Once it is approved by the Common Council, the license is issued,” Lynch said.
The license period runs from July 1 to June 30.
