Comox council adds key priorities from parks and trails master plan to strategic plan
Comox Town Council is taking steps to implement its Parks and Trails master plan.
The plan was first presented to council this summer. It provides a long-term direction for managing parks, trails, and related infrastructure. Developed with the support of community feedback, research, and analysis, the plan establishes a comprehensive roadmap for investment, resource management, and decision-making.
“Our community is passionate about our parks and trails,” said Comox Mayor Nicole Minions. “By adding priority projects to our Strategic Plan, we are looking to enhance recreation, accessibility and our community spaces in ways that reflect what we heard during our public engagement events.”
The Town of Comox is taking steps to advance recommendations by adding several key initiatives to its Strategic Plan. Comox Council has identified several projects from the Parks and Trails Master Plan to advance in the coming years. It is important to note that these projects are not yet funded. The Master Plan is a guiding document that outlines long-term priorities and community needs, but does not commit the Town to build or finance specific projects at this stage.
To move ideas forward, Council added selected items to the Town’s Strategic Plan, which is the high-level document that sets out the Council’s long-term goals and vision for the community. Inclusion in the Strategic Plan signals that a project is a future priority, but funding decisions will only be made later through the annual budget and capital planning processes. Each initiative will still require detailed review, costing, and formal Council approval before any project or initiative proceeds.
Comox Community Centre Outdoors / Village Park Concept Plan – Development of a concept plan to guide future improvements at the Community Centre Field, with potential new amenities such as an inclusive playground, picnic areas, covered gathering space, basketball and tennis courts, a pump track, shaded seating, and improved drainage.
Marina Park Concept Plan – Preparation of a management plan for Comox’s most visited park, ensuring upgrades and long-term investments keep pace with community use and downtown growth.
Lancaster Park Concept Plan – Reclassification of Lancaster Park from a Neighbourhood Park to a Community Park, with planning for new amenities such as washrooms, shade and shelter, updated play features, parking improvements, and a splash pad.
New Park Washrooms – Addition of accessible washroom facilities at Kye Bay and within the waterfront nature parks network to address one of the community’s top priorities.
Beach Access Improvements – Accessibility upgrades at Kye Bay and Point Holmes, including beach mats, trail enhancements, and seasonal maintenance.
Dog Park Pilot Projects – Creation of smaller, designated off-leash areas in neighbourhood parks to expand opportunities for dog owners while reducing conflicts in sensitive areas.
