Bottas: Sir Frank Williams was an amazing leader

Formula 1 driver Valtteri Bottas opened up about the various leadership styles he has encountered throughout his career and how they have influenced his development both on and off the track.

Bottas, who has driven for teams such as Williams, Mercedes, and Alfa Romeo (formerly Sauber), shared his insights on the impact of working under different team principals and how these experiences have shaped his own approach to leadership.

28-year-old Bottas began his F1 journey under the legendary Sir Frank Williams at Williams Racing. He described Frank as an “amazing leader” who commanded immense respect within the team. “When Frank rolled into the garage, you know, everyone’s back went straight,” Bottas recalled in a recent podcast with Marc Priestley aka @F1Elvis.

“People were racing for Frank and working for Frank because everyone felt like he deserved good results. That was something quite unique.” The reverence Frank Williams inspired in his team left a lasting impression on Bottas, emphasizing the power of respect in leadership.

Transitioning to Mercedes, Bottas worked under Toto Wolff, whom he praised as a “top, top leader.” He noted Wolff’s exceptional ability to connect with people and maximize their potential.

Bottas: Toto has always been really good at making the most out of people

“Toto has always been really good at making the most out of people and also figuring out if they’re actually in the right role or not,” Bottas explained, of the man that once referred to him as the “perfect wingman” to Lewis Hamilton.

Bottas cited Ferrari team boss Frédéric Vasseur’s different style of leadership that has been equally effective: “Fred is definitely more of a calming factor, which, at the moment, I feel is really good for Ferrari. There’s less hectic, less politics. He gives lots of responsibility to the people themselves, which might then make some people flourish more.”

Reflecting on his own evolution in the sport, Bottas noted the shift in his role from a rookie driver to a team leader. Early in his career, he was mentored by more experienced teammates like Felipe Massa at Williams and Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes.

“Starting as a rookie, you’re definitely not a leader,” Bottas admitted. “But then when I joined Sauber Stake F1 Team, things changed suddenly. I got a rookie teammate, and I was the old guy, the more experienced guy.”

This new role brought greater responsibility, not just in terms of performance but also in motivating the team and driving them forward.

For Bottas, this transition into a leadership role felt natural and has been an enriching part of his journey in Formula 1. “It’s been super interesting, and it’s been actually quite natural for me to carry that role,” he concluded.

Ten times a Grand Prix winner, Bottas has yet to find a deal to keep him on the F1 grid beyond 2024. His career, his experiences under various leaders and his growth into a leadership role himself provided him with a unique perspective on what it takes to guide a big team to success at the highest level. Surely still a valuable asset.
