SO I HAVE WORKED IN MEDIA IN THE MAGAZINE INDUSTRY FOR TWO DECADES, BUT THERE WAS A THREE YEAR PERIOD WHERE I SORT OF STEPPED AWAY AND SCRATCHED AN ENTREPRENEURIAL ITCH AND DECIDED TO START MY OWN BUSINESS, AND IT REALLY I THOUGHT THERE WAS GOING TO BE A BIG LEARNING CURVE, BUT INSTEAD I LEARNED THERE WERE ALL THESE LESSONS FROM THE WORLD OF JOURNALISM THAT REALLY PREPARED ME. I KNEW HOW TO SET A DEADLINE AND THEN MEET IT. I KNEW HOW TO TALK TO A TARGET AUDIENCE, AND THEN IF I DIDN’T KNOW SOMETHING, I PUT ON MY REPORTER’S HAT AND CALLED AN EXPERT. SO ALL OF THAT I TRIED TO WEAVE INTO A BOOK FOR NON-JOURNALISTS TO TEACH THEM THESE SAME LESSONS. SO. SO WHO IS THIS BOOK FOR? FOR THE PERSON SAYING, YOU KNOW WHAT, I THINK I WANT TO TAKE A RISK AND GO OUT ON MY OWN. IS THAT IS THAT OUR READER? YEAH. I ACTUALLY SAY THAT FOR THE THREE E’S. SO FIRST OF ALL, THERE’S ENTREPRENEURS. FIRST TIME ENTREPRENEURS ARE GREAT. ALSO EMPLOYEES WHO HAVE NOW LANDED IN MANAGEMENT ROLES AND MAYBE DIDN’T PLAN ON BEING IN MANAGEMENT, OR THEY’RE A FIRST TIME MANAGER, OKAY. AND THEN THE THIRD IS EXECUTIVES WHO’VE DONE THIS FOR YEARS, BUT THEY’RE LOOKING FOR A FRESH PERSPECTIVE AND LIKE TO CONTINUE LEARNING. SO TELL ME ABOUT THE EXPERTS THAT YOU REACHED OUT TO FOR THE BOOK. OTHER EDITORS, JOURNALISTS, WHO ARE WE GOING TO READ ABOUT IT? SO I REALLY WANTED TO GET VOICES FROM A LOT OF DIFFERENT EDITORS. SO I SPOKE TO ABOUT 20 DIFFERENT PEOPLE. AND THIS RANGES FROM THE EDITOR OF WOMAN’S DAY MAGAZINE TO THE EDITOR OF ENTREPRENEUR MAGAZINE. THEN I ALSO REALLY WANTED TO SPEAK TO EDITORS WHO HAD GONE ON TO DO DIFFERENT THINGS. SO I SPOKE TO EDITORS WHO ARE NOW VP OF NETFLIX. I SPOKE TO EDITORS WHO ARE INTERIOR DESIGNERS AND EDITORS WHO ARE DEANS OF COLLEGES. SO REALLY, THEY ALL HAVE ONE THING IN COMMON. THEY HAD STARTED AS JOURNALISTS. THAT’S SO INTERESTING. SO KIND OF LIKE NO MATTER WHICH WAY YOU GO, YOU THINK YOU’RE GOING TO LAND AS THIS JOURNALIST FOREVER. BUT WAIT A MINUTE, THERE COULD BE A DETOUR. YEAH. AND I THINK THAT THE IMPORTANT THING IS THAT, YOU KNOW, EVEN IF YOU AREN’T A JOURNALIST, YOU CAN LEARN SOME OF THESE TIPS AND TRICKS THAT THE MEDIA KNOW FOR PROMOTING YOUR PRODUCT AND RUNNING YOUR BUSINESS AND LEADING YOUR TEAM. REALLY, I LOVE THAT. OKAY, SO IS THERE A SECRET SAUCE? IS THERE AN OVERALL KIND OF SENTIMENT OR A PIECE OF ADVICE THAT, YOU KNOW, MANY OF THE EXPERTS GAVE YOU? AND I THINK THAT THOSE TWO THINGS PAIRED WITH, YOU KNOW, OPTIMISM PAIRED WITH SHOWING UP, YOU KNOW, THE MEDIA, WHEN THERE’S A NATURAL DISASTER, WHEN THERE’S A TRAGEDY, THE MEDIA DOESN’T CALL IN SICK.
